The Junior National Athletic Meet was held at the Sugadadasa Stadium, in Colombo for the past 6 days (29th of September to 3rd Of October). Five of our college students were selected to represent Jaffna province at the National level and one student, Jasmenan won Gold medal for U17 long jump and made the College and Jaffna proud.
Out of the five selected to represent Jaffna province at national level, four became first and one who represented under 13 came second in the provincial level meet. The team practiced well under the able guidance of Mr.Swaminathan, the Teacher-In-Charge and Coach Mr.S.Ramanan. Three of the students were junior members in their respective levels (14 years boy participated in under 15 High Jump, 18 years boy participated in under 19 100 m, and 20 years boy participated in under 21 Shot-put). 17 years Jasmenan participated in under 17 Long jump and won the Glorious Gold medal for our proudest Jaffna Hindu College. Its really an award for their hard-work.
Mr.S.Vakeesan, who is currently representing the SriLankan Basket Ball team, was the first man to take a Gold medal for our College at the national level after a long gab. And now, Jasmenan striked again another gold for the college. These medals indicate that Jaffna Hindu College has begun to print their footstep in the Athletic filed once again after a long absence at the national level and hopefully our students will get us more Medals in the forthcoming years.
Mas.Jasmenan, who jumped 6.80 meters at his fifth jump, was rewarded with a Gold medal where as a student from Nalanda College was awarded the silver medal.
The medals was awarded by a Sri Lankan former Athlete Mr.Sugath Thilakaratne. He expressed his happiness to award that Gold Medal to a student from a Tamil School in Jaffna. It was really an emotional situation for the old boys who were there when the Anthem of Jaffna Hindu College was played after the awarding. The silence when the Anthem was played and the standing salutes of some young past students of the college was really a moment that should be written in the history.
Mr.Seveal, President UK OBA sponsored high quality tracksuit for the Athelets.
Although it was a heavy rainy day in Colombo, there were some old boys to encourage and cheer Jasmenan during his performance. As he established his feet and as soon as he was adjusted as gold medalist more old boys started coming in to congratulate the Golden Son of our College. Members of the Old Boys Association-Colombo and also other old boys residing in Colombo attended the awarding ceremony in Sugadadasa Stadium.
