The Jaffna Hindu College OBA (UK) Annual General Meeting was held on Sunday 08 November 2009 at The Archbishop Lancfranc School, Croydon, Surrey.

AGM started with a minute silence to remember those who lost their lives last year.

President in his welcome speech explained how the OBA-UK being the first OBA in the UK took initiatives to see the ways to help the suffering Tamil people in Sri Lanka.

He continued to say that OBA-UK organised a meeting of all the Tamil schools OBA's at the beginning of May 09, to find ways to bring out the suffering of the Tamils due to the war to other people in the UK and to see how OBA's could support the displaced Tamils.

He also stated that OBA-UK was the first OBA to contribute donation for the Tamil School Sports Association (UK)'s appeal to help the children in Vanni. Furthermore, in June/July committee members contributed to help the displaced Tamils and supplied goods to the camp during his visit to Vanni.

He mentioned that he was at the College to open the ‘Principal House’ last month and provided sports equipment and digital camera for the school.

President and the Secretary emphasised that due to the situation in Sri Lanka all the events were postponed and scaled down during the year. It was stated Jolly Vibe 2008, 2nd Battle of Blues - Cricket Match between the JHC OBA and Hartley OBA and Kalai Arasi 2009 were organised during the year. OBA - UK Open Cricket Champions at the TSSA (UK) - Summer Sports Festival -2009 and the cricket team were congratulated.

At the AGM, members accepted that the Land purchase project needs to be completed as soon as possible and all the Kalai Arasi income to be used for this purpose.

It was also discussed how the OBA UK can generate fund to help orphan children for a long period of time. Two members have already been nominated by the Committee to come up with project proposal and few members at the AGM volunteered to help these members to produce the project proposal to the Committee.

Continuing the tradition vegetarian snacks, coffee, tea and soft drinks were served at the end of the meeting.

AGM closed with College Anthem.

Nice to see the minutes. It is fitting in a way to praise the OBA-UK's initiative at an AGM of OBA and talk about Hindu College and help to Tamil Community. I personally feel the we Tamils should come out of talking only about the uplift of our community or our school or in that smaller circle. For an out-sider this create jelouse (parden my spelling if its wrong). We should move away from the thinking that Tamils are brainy and others are not and so on which concept is incorrect. JHC of course has been blessed with a culture, built over many many years, of competitive studying, taking in intelects and possible hard working candidates into student admissions and moulding them into citizens of excellent discipline. That excellent discipline should extend to appreciate other communities, people with other relegious faiths an so on,aswell. Long Term Vision of not just JHC alone, all other tamil uplifting organisations, I strongly urge start thinking in one country, one society level in this tiny Island and should reflect in the Executive Bodies messages to members which in turn will run down to members mind. We should learn from the mistakes of past politicians (in my opinion half baked learnerred fools, having made the community practically loose every thing for many poor unlucky souls due to the egos of those politicians - leaving aside the beneficiaries of war which made the community come out of the well and became very much better off financially and so on). I know this comment will draw many criticism to which I have plans to respond. Let us commit our time into more productive works like JHCs OBA and organisations are doing. Thanks all,
