'Kalai Arasi' – Jaffna Hindu College Old Boy’s Association (UK)’s Annual Cultural Programme for the 11th year celebrated with a packed hall at Zorastrian Centre, Rayners lane, Middlesex on Saturday 31 October 2009 to help the ‘Alma Matter’.
Kalaiyarasi 2009 started at 7.00 PM with lighting of ceremonial oil lamp by the mothers and wives of the past students. It was a proud moment for the Hinduites to sing along the school song after a mini silence for the teachers, old boys and all the Tamils died this year.
As the tradition, an array of colourful programmes started with Baratha Natiyam by the students of Mrs Annapoorani Sathiyamoorthy ( Daughter of our past teacher Mr Muthukumaru ) and by the students of Menaka Raviraj and followed by a Musical extravaganza conducted by Mr Bremakumar, a well known old student of our college.
The chief guest of the evening Dr Mahesan Niranjan, now a professor at the university of Southampton gave a fitting speech with his memories at the school. He is the eldest son of Mr Mahesan, who was an English teacher at the school for more than 15 years.
It was heart warming to see so many past students studied at the school in different periods from 1947 to 2009. Also it was great to see many of our past Presidents, patrons, JHC OBA President and some members from Norway with their families occupying the front seats.
OBA (UK) awarded, ‘Inthuvin Mynthan’ to Mr S K Rajathevan ( son of late Mr Kanagaratnam – Jaffna Hindu Junior school head teacher ) and Mr Saba Suganthan for their support to the OBA in the UK in many ways from the day it was inaugurated in the UK.
The President, Mr Kathir Seveal stated in his speech, the achievements of the school in the recent GCE(A/L) examinations and the need to help the school to continue the good work being done the Principal, Teachers and other staff.
The President reiterated in his speech that all the funds raised from Kalai Arasi 2009 as agreed at previous AGM’s will be used to complete the project to purchase the Land with the House now being renovated and opened by the president when he visited the college this month and now being used as Principal’s Quarters. He also said that OBA has appointed a team to come up with proposal to raise fund to help the IDPs in Vanni.
During the show it was announced about Principal’s plan to have Kalai Arasi 2010 at Cumaraswamy Hall on 01 August 2010 inviting all the OBA’s around the world.
To continue the Hindu College tradition, vegetarian food with ‘Payasam’ were served for dinner at the function.
OBA Secretary Mr Nanthakumar thanked every one for making the day, a success.
Kalai Arasi 2009 closed at 11.30 PM with College Song.
