Kalaiyarasi 2011, JHCA Canada’s mega cultural event was held on the evening of Saturday, October 8th, 2011 at the Chinese Cultural Center in Scarborough.

The cultural event of JHCA Canada, which is held annually during the Saraswathi Pooja season, drew a large crowd this year too. It was an evening of entertainment with many cultural programmes including Carnatic music, Bharatha natyam, musical discourse, stage plays, fashion show and many more.

The event started, as tradition, with the lighting of the oil lamp. Mrs.Usha Chandrakumaran, Mrs.Somasegarasundaram, Mrs.Nila Nagulesapillai, Mrs.Balendran, and Mrs.Vijekulasingham lighted the lamp. After the lighting of the lamp, Ms.Vishali Krishnanandan sang the national anthem, and Dr.Mythily Thayanithy sang the college song. That was followed by a silent prayer.

Mr. Krishnanandan, the Chairperson of Kalaiyarasi organizing committee welcomed the participants. Following that was a welcome dance by the students of Ms.Kumuthini Srikanthan that created the mood of the event.

Next was a Carnatic music program by Pon. Sundaralingam and his group. On the background, playing violin was Ms.Thanadevi Mithradeva, and Miruthangam was by Mr.Sri Vasudevan Rajalingham. It was a delightful treat to the ears.

Next two were dance programs. Students of Srimathi Shymala Thayalan entertained the audience with an excellent dance performance, followed by a graceful Bharatha natya performance by Yarlini Rajakulasingham, which was a masterpiece of the event.

Before presenting those two visual treats, Pon. Balendran, President of JHCA Canada addressed the gathering.

Before the recess, a musical discourse was presented by Dr.Mythily Thayanithy with Mr.Anandaraja at miruthangam, Mithuran Manoharan at violin, and Shoban Anadarajah at kadam.

The second session after the interval started with a dance program by Selvakumar sisters; Sharmini and Aswini.

Following the dance, Mr.Chandrakumaran, the Chief Guest of the evening was honoured to address the gathering. In his speech, Mr.Chandrakumaran remembered all the teachers who had influenced students so much in their studies and moulding their personality.  He said “Today, I can still recite the names of those teachers who have shaped my life till this day. That is a true testament to the greatness of our school and educators.”

The peak of the event was two dramas; “Idaiveli” by Maran Selliah troupe and “Poomiyil iruppathum vaanaththil parapathum” by Devaki Muneeswaran troupe.

Adding the final colours to the evening was the Fashion Show.

In between the programs, prizes were awarded to the winners of the Kalaiyarasi 2011 contest in Maths, General Knowledge, and Tamil. The contest was introduced with the intention of improving the aptitude, general competency, and Tamil proficiency; also, as a binding with the father’s alma mater.

Mr.P.Thayanithy delivered the vote of thanks.

The MCs, Mr.E. Krishnanandan and Gayathri Srikathirkamanathan, nicely presented the event, making it a grand success.
