Siva Thavendran, Melbourne OBA President in his speech further said:
Our Victorian OBA is 21 years old now. Since its birth in 1990, we have been organizing programs almost every year to raise fund for our school developments. As you all know, at Ghana Mazhai we always perform live music show as our main entertainment, and this year is no difference.
Every year, we manage to raise funds through these programs and contribute in many ways to school development. Last year was a successful year. With all your wholehearted support, we managed to raise funds to carry out larger projects at school. Currently our community is working on two projects.
Jaffna Hindu College has a long history of maintaining a high standard of education and discipline. It is because of this over the many generations they have produced many talented individuals, who have contributed a lot to our society. I believe it is our duty to support this great institution to prosper and produce many more great talents.
After what happened over the last two years in our homeland, it is clear that our younger generation in the North and East need help and direction. They need better education, welfare, and better disciplined. These are our strength in the past, and we need to help our kids to get it back. I strongly believe, by supporting and strengthening our schools to provide excellent education to our kids and discipline them, one day we create a new prosperous society in our motherland.
It is a huge task to lift our younger generation affected by the war, and at the same time maintaining the standard of education and discipline in all other schools too. There are many organizations in Australia and around the world helping those affected kids; we salute all of them for their great work. After all, kids are our future.
A traditional welcome dance was given by Srimathy Meena Elankumaran and her students of Nadanalaya Dance School. Following the welcome, the Chief Guest was invited to address the gathering. Mr. Ganeshwaran recalled his golden memories of his college days, and noted the need to train our children to speak in Tamil.
With that note from the Chief Guest, the floor opened for the music show, and the ghana mahzhai started filling the ears of the audience. Sivaranjani and troupe provided the orchestra for the Ghana mazhai, they have been performing for Melbourne OBA functions for many years.
A delicious dinner was served in between, and the musical show continued until 10.00 PM. The Ghana mazhai Souvenir also was released at the event. The souvenir was well designed and contains some good articles that includes Jaffna Devan, History of Jaffna, Historyof Hindu,Gnana Vairavar Temple, Naam Kanda Mariyar, and 1960 Football Team. It also has some wonderful photographs of Jaffna Hindu College, and the front cover of the book takes our memories back to our School.
The evening of entertainment concluded with a raffle draw. Mr.Aathiththan Thangarajah, Secretary of the Melbourne OBA delivered the vote of thanks.
The event was well organized and it was a great evening that was not only entertaining but also brought the old boys together for a good cause.
