
Sydney OBA annually holds Geethavani, a musical extravaganza and donates the proceedings of the event to school development work or to the urgent needs of our society. In addition to this, from 2008 it recognizes the best performer in A/L examination with a cash reward of rupees 20,000.
The last year proceedings of the Geethavani was donated towards the welfare of the war displaced students of vanni, who have either entered the university after the displacement or are the students who were compelled to discontinue the studies due to the last phase of the war and have recommenced their studies. The most destitute students were selected to receive this donation.46 such students were selected and each was given Rupees 10,000. The donation was given to them to commence or recommence their studies and to meet the immediate basic needs.
The donation was channelled through All Ceylon Hindu Congress. Mr. Neelakandan, the Secretary of All Ceylon Hindu Congress and an old boy of Jaffna Hindu took the responsibility to distribute the money.
When speaking to Mr. Neelakandan, the beneficiaries have expressed their gratitude to Jaffna Hindu old boys worldwide and specifically to Sydney OBA. They have appreciated the thoughtfulness of the old boys and have repeatedly thanked for the kindness shown.
