Mr Chelliah Yogamoorthy, an old boy of our College (1966 Maths) received the prestigious "Member of the Order of the British Empire" (MBE) award for the New Year 2011. This New Year honour was bestowed on him, recognizing his outstanding service to Department of Transport.
Mr. Yogamoorthy studied at our college from 1963 to 1966 and was boarded at college hostel. He is now a lead quantity Surveyor for Highway Agency in U.K. He served the U.K. Department of Transport for 23 years; also he is an active member & founder of Midland Tamil cultural Association, which is going to celebrates its silver jubilee this year.
In an interview with him immediately after he received this new Year honour, he praised his teachers at Jaffna Hindu who laid the foundation for his success.
Chelliah Yogamoorthy of 12 Armada Close, Lichfield was born in 1946 to Mr and Mrs V. Chelliah of Karaveddy, Srilanka.
He spent most of his early years in Karaveddi; studied up to GCE (O/L) at Vigneshwara College, Karaveddi and joined Jaffna Hindu College in 1963 to follow A/Level Maths stream. In 1966 he entered the Engineering Faculty of the University of Ceylon at Peradeniya.
Excerpts from the interview:
When I joined Jaffna Hindu, Mr C Sabaratnam was the Principal. Within one year “C Sab” retired; Mr N Sabaratnam became the Principal. I was fortunate to have some of the excellent teachers; Mr Varatharajaperumal, Mr S Ponnambalam, Mr Arumugasamy and Mr Karunakaran. The highest number of students ever to enter the Engineering Faculty from one school was from Jaffna Hindu in 1966. I lived in the hostel under the guardianship of KSS. Jaffna Hindu hostel was for a long period a second home for our family; six brothers occupied the hostel between 1952 and 1973. I completed my degree in Engineering in 1970. After working on a road project in Ratnapura, I moved to England in 1972. Initially I worked with civil engineering contractors building motorways and with consulting engineers on design before joining Shropshire County Council in 1976. I lived in Shropshire for 11 years, a life changing period; I got married, qualified as a Chartered Engineer, became father of two boys and worked as Resident Engineer on a number of road projects. I joined the Department of Transport in 1987 as a quantity surveyor in Birmingham. I was in at the inception of the Highways Agency, an executive agency of the Department where I became the leader of the Quantity Surveying team. When I moved to Birmingham I joined a Tamil School, which was started in 1986 to teach to read and write Tamil. It was a small school, later converted as a part of Midland Tamil Cultural Association, a registered charity, which has become a part of our life. I have been closely involved with the school and remain as a trustee; it will be celebrating its 25th anniversary (silver jubilee) this year. I continued my studies with the Open University Business School (OUBS) until I was 50. I later became a lecturer with OUBS on their MBA programme, here in the UK, Rhine Army in Germany and in Moscow. I was also a Governor of Joseph Chamberlain 6th Form College in Birmingham. |
Hindu old boys around the globe are delighted to hear this news and would like to congratulate him & his family and wish him good luck for his future endeavours.

Congratulations!
I do not think I have met you but as a fellow-Sri Lankan, it gives me great pride and joy to learn of the award of an MBE to you in the Queen's New Year list. Last year, I rejoiced at the award of an MBE to a school friend Winston Jacob in Papua New Guinea in the Queen's Birthday list. Glad that Sri Lankans are making a habit of receiving these awards!
Congratulations and every good wish to you and your family.
