Senior Journalist E.R.Thiruchelvam passed away today, Wednesday 28 September 2016, in Jaffna at the age of 83 after a brief illness. He was one of the well-respected journalists in Sri Lanka and was a popular Tamil teacher of Jaffna Hindu College from 1972 to 1980.
Mr.Thiruchelvam was an old boy of Jaffna Central College and was a graduate of University of Kolkatta in Arts. He was a strong leftist. He joined the Eazhanadu editorial board in the early 1980s and had an illustrious career in media for over a half century. He was a Columnist in “Seithi” published from Kandy and was a Writer in the very popular Sinthamani Weekly. He also was in the editorial board of “Thisai” newspaper and was a senior Assistant Editor of Ealanatham daily. He was the main lecturer in Journalism studies for the external students of the Jaffna University. A handbook on Fundamentals of Journalism authored by him was recently published. He also was in the teaching service for over 25 years and offered his invaluable service to the students.
Viewing: His remains are kept at his residence at Asirwatham Lane, Jaffna for people to pay their last respect.
Funeral Service and Burial: Funeral service will be held on Thursday, 29 Sep 2016, at 2:00 PM at St. Mary’s Church and thereafter will be taken for burial at Konchanji Matha Cemetery.
