Vinayaka Chaturthi 2014 Tomorrow, 29 Aug 2014
Posted on: 28/08/2014 (Thursday)
Vinayaka Chaturthi 2014 will be celebrated by all Vinayakar or Pillaiyar devotees on Friday, 29 August 2014. The birthday of lord Vinayakar is celebrated as Vinayaka Chaturthi. It is a very important festival celebrated by Hindus all over the world. Vinayaka Chaturthi is also called Ganesha Chaturthi, and in North India, it is a grand celebration spanning to ten days. Lord Vinayakar is considered by Hindus as a symbol of luck, wisdom, and good fortune.
The Vinayaka Chaturthi falls during the month of August or September every year. People start making the idols of Lord Vinayakar days ahead of Vinayaka Chaturthi. The idols are kept at homes and worshiped till the birthday of Lord Vinayakar is celebrated. People take out a procession on roads carrying the idols of Lord Vinayakar on the next day of Vinayaka Chatruthi. The devotees dance and sing and carry the idol to a river or the ocean where it is immersed in the water. This ritual symbolizes the journey of Lord Vinayakar to his heavenly abode on Kailasha Parvatham. It is believed that one should not look at the moon during the rituals as he laughed on Lord Vinayakar when he danced.
It is believed by Hindus that Lord Vinayakar takes away all the misfortunes of his devotees when he is immersed under the water. Apart from people keeping the idol of Lord Vinayakar in their homes, communities organize a big pandal or tent where a huge idol of Lord Vinayakar is kept and people come in large numbers to worship their God.
Lord Vinayakar is known as Vigna karthar or the one who removes all obstacles. He is also called Buddhi Pradayakar or one who gives intelligence.
