Thai Pongal on Friday, 15 Jan 2016
Posted on: 12/01/2016 (Tuesday)
Thai Pongal 2016 will be celebrated worldwide on Friday, the 15th January 2016. Thai Pongal is celebrated on the first day of the month of Thai according to the Tamil calendar. Thai is the first month of the Tamil Almanac, which is devised according to changes in planets and nature. The first day of Thai marks the planet Sun entering the Capricorn, beginning its northward journey for a six-month period and also marks the departure of the southeast monsoons. Thai Pongal normally falls between 12th and 15th day of January in the Gregorian calendar.
Pongal is a festivity to show our gratitude to those who helped us in the bountiful harvest; the Sun god, the nature, the cattle, the equipment used, and rejoice and share our joy and happiness of getting a bountiful harvest with others. Although it is basically a harvest festival of farmers, today it has become a national festival for all Tamils. The whole Tamil population of the world celebrates it without any differences. Therefore, it is widely known as "Tamil Thai Pongal" or the "Festival of the Tamils".
Pongal also signifies prosperity. The boiling of milk, which seethes up and spills over, is a propitious symbol of abundance. It symbolizes that happiness, joy, and love should seethe from your inner self and spill onto others around.
Let’s celebrate this festivity knowing the inner meanings of our customs and traditions.
The Jaffna Hindu Web team wishes all a Very Happy Thai Pongal.
தை பிறந்தால் வழி பிறக்கும்.
May the dawn of Thai, pave the way for new opportunities and bring brightness into your life.
