Posted on: 16/11/2012 (Friday)

The students who excelled at international events this year (2012) were honoured today, Friday 16th November 2012, by the school. Three students, Mas.R.Senthuran (High Jump – Australia), Mas.A.Abinanthan (Maths and Science Olympiad), and Mas.I.Ilangeethan (Maths and Science Olympiad), were honoured today at a function hosted by the school.

Mas.Ratnasingam Senthuran bagged a silver medal in high jump at the 2012 Adidas All Schools Track & Field Championships held on 11th November 2012 at the Lakeside Stadium at Albert Park, Melbourne.  In the U16 high jump, he reached 1.95m and won a silver medal. Mas.A.Abinanthan received a silver medal at the 9th International Maths and Science Olympiad (IMSO 2012) held in Laknow, India from 29th October to 1st November 2012, and Mas.I.Ilangeethan too won a bronze medal at the same event.

The function to accolade these students started today morning at 7.45am in front of Vannarpannai Sivan Kovil. The three students who brought honour to the school were garlanded and taken in procession with the college band from Vannarpannai Sivan Kovil to the school along the KKS road. Principal, teachers, students and prefects, old boys, and parents joined in the procession. The students were first taken to Sivagnana Vairava Peruman temple where special pooja was offered to our college deity.

Next one was a memorable event and a welcoming new turning point in our relationship with other schools.  A team of teachers from Jaffna Central College came to the function to wish Mas.R.Senthuran who won a silver medal in Australia at the 2012 Adidas All Schools Track & Field Championships. The teachers congratulated Senthuran and presented a memento to him on behalf of their school.

After that touching event, the programme continued at the Cumaraswamy Hall, starting with the Principal’s address. Principal Mr.V.Ganesharajah congratulated the students who won awards at international events in academic as well as sport activities and brought pride to the school. He motivated other students too to excel not only nationally but also internationally.

Then the three students were honoured by the JHC OBA Jaffna. They were garlanded and presented with cash rewards. On behalf of the Sports Committee of OBA Jaffna, Mr.Tharmakulasingam delivered a tribute speech.

Mr.Shun Thayalan, old boy of our school and the Deputy Sports Director of Jaffna District, addressed the gathering and presented a memento to Senturan. On behalf of Senthuran’s classmates, their class teacher honoured Senthuran by draping him with a golden shawl.

The teachers who were behind the success of these students also were recognized at the event. Teachers in Charge Mr.K.Swaminathan, Mr.S.Harishankar, and coach Mr.S.Ramanan were honoured for their unstinted support to the student to reach these heights at international events.

Then the three international medallists were called to make speeches. They shared their experiences and the challenges they faced, in their speeches. A documentary of their performances was displayed during their speeches.

Winding up the event, Deputy Principal Mr.S.Nimalan delivered the vote of the thanks and the function came to a close with college song.

In recognizing and motivating student achievements, Melbourne OBA sponsored a shoe for Mas.Senthuran and Sydney OBA presented cash reward and a greeting card signed by all OBA Members.
