Prize Day 2015 held on 12th Nov: Assoc Prof.Kuperan was the Chief Guest

The annual Prize Day of Jaffna Hindu College was held on last Thursday, the 12th Novemebr 2015, at the Kumaswamy hall under the patronage of the Principal Mr.I.Thayanandaraja. Assoc Prof.Ponnudurai Kuperan, a distinguished old boy of Jaffna Hindu College, was the Chief Guest.
The prize day started with a special pooja at the college temple to invoke the blessings of our deity Sivagnana Perumal. After the prayers, the Chief Guest, Associate Professor Kuperan, and his wife Mrs.Jamunadevi Kuperan were invited by the teachers club for a tea party at the Sabaratnam auditorium. Thereafter, the guests were taken on a procession with the college band to the Kumaraswamy hall. The prize giving function started with the recital of thevarams and presenting of the 2014 annual principal’s report. Then the chief guest addressed the gathering.
The Chief Guest, Associate Professor P.Kuperan, FRCP, FRCPA, is an old boy of Jaffna Hindu College (1969 A/L Bio) and graduated from the University of Ceylon in 1974. He had his postgraduate training in Internal Medicine and Haematology in the United Kingdom from 1977 to 1984. He has worked and taught medical students in many countries including Sri Lanka, England, Malaysia, New Zealand, and Singapore. He was a Senior Consultant to the National University Hospital, Singapore and Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH), Singapore. He also functions as an External Examiner for the University of Malaya, National University of Malaysia, and the Post Graduate Medical Institute of Sri Lanka. He was the International Advisor to the Royal College of Physicians of London for Singapore since 2004. As a WHO Expert, he has helped in the development of blood transfusion services in Cambodia. He was the recipient of the BD award by the Singapore Society of Pathology in 2007 for his significant contribution to the Practice of Pathology in Singapore.
Following the Chief Guest's address, students gave speeches in Tamil and English. Then the Chief Guest's wife presented the prizes to the students. Teachers, other schools principals and teachers, old boys, and parents honoured the students and the school by gracing the event.
At the prize giving, year 6 to year 12 students who have excelled in studies, sport and extra-curricular activities received prizes based on merits. The top performed students at the year-end class exams and at the GCE (O/L) 2014 and GCE (A/L) 2014 examinations received their prizes from Mrs.Jamunadevi Kuperan. Also, the students who won in the international and national level contests received gold medals and the sportsmen received the colours awards.
