Jolly Bash International Cricket Tournament held in Penang, Malaysia

Jolly Bash International organized a first-ever international 7 a side cricket tournament in Penang, Malaysia on 15th and 16th of April 2017. Four teams, Melbourne Jolly Stars, Melbourne Supper Kings Buffalos, Jaffna Grasshoppers Premier League (GPL), and Malaysia BMCC, participated in the tournament. The tournament was organized grandly at the Penang Sports Club in Malaysia for two days. Jolly Bash was sponsored by Lebara Mobile, Aliya Restaurants Malaysia, and individual sponsors Dr.Ragu and Mr.Ghana Soma.

It was really a good initiative by Jolly Bash International Committee that includes Mr.S.Narendran , Mr.T.Prabhaharan , Mr.S.Thavendran, and Mr.T.Athavan. The committee has planned to hold this event annually. JBI is hoping that This tournament will make a base for Ex and current Northern cricketers to meet again and play some quality cricket, Most importantly giving an opportunity and experience for some of Jaffna cricketers tour overseas  and play cricket.

During the 7 a side tournament, the Melbourne Jolly Stars and Jaffna GPL team were qualified for Grand final match. The Jaffna GPL won the toss and elected to bat first and scored 77 for 2 wickets (Anbujan 14, Kajananth 6, Sujanthan 23, and Sanjayan 17). The match was very tightly competed and both teams played well. However, the Jolly Stars Melbourne scored 53 for 4 Wickets (Garthik 6, Sivane 11, Sanjith 2, Athavan 5, Thavendran 8). The Jaffna GPL team won the championship. Ex-players from Jaffna Hindu College, Jaffna St John's College , Mahajana College , Central College, and other schools formed the GPL team and was managed by Mr.Gopalakrishnan, teacher of Jaffna St. John's College, and was captained by Mas.A.Anbujan. Melbourne Jolly Stars was captained by Mr.S.Garthik.

Best Batsman of the Tournament - Mas.R.Kajananth from Jaffna GPL Team, who was also the Captain of U19 Jaffna Hindu College team

Best Bowler of the tournament - Mas.K.Sujanthan

On 16th Sunday, there was a 20x20 cricket match between the Jaffna GPL team and the International team and again GPL team captained by Mas.A. Anbujan scored 176 for 4 wickets and won the trophy. The International team captained by Mr.Naren scored 115 runs for 8 wickets.


It was appreciated by Jaffna GPL team members that this is a new experience in their cricket life and definitely will add value to their sports career. Also, the organizers thanked Penang Sports Club for providing all the facilities for Jolly Bash and expressed special thanks to Mr.Ganeshan, the Secretary of Penang Sports Club, Malaysia. The Jolly Bash committee thanked Lebara and their sponsors as well.
