Jaffna Hindu Student Parliament first sitting: Chief Guest Consul General of India, Jaffna

The first sitting of the Jaffna Hindu Student Parliament was held on last Wednesday, 25 January 2017, at the Cumaraswamy Hall. The sitting started at 11.00 AM and the Consul General of India in Jaffna, his excellency Mr.A.Nadarajan, graced the occasion as chief guest. Mr.Akilathas, Deputy Director of Education, also was invited as a special guest. Student parliaments were formed in schools abiding a circular from the Ministry of Education.
Before commencing the parliament sitting, a special Pooja was held at the college Gnana Bhairavar temple. After the Pooja the guests were taken on procession with college band to the Cumaraswamy Hall where the sitting was held. The student parliament gave an opportunity for the students to learn about the parliament proceedings and to develop their oratorical skills.
During the first sitting, first, the speaker of the student parliament was elected, and then the motions by the prime minister and ministers were placed before the parliament. The motions moved mainly focused on school development, student welfare, and societal culture. The uniqueness of this parliament was that there was no opposition. The school principal will be the chief secretary of this student parliament.
The Principal Mr.I.Thayantharajah in his address proudly referred to the 13 international OBAs and said that Jaffna Hindu has 13 high commissions in various countries. Also, the Chief Guest Mr.A.Nadarajan addressing the student parliament admired the individuality of the school and the personalities it has produced in various fields. He also said that Jaffna Hindu Student Parliament is the first parliament that gave him opportunity to speak.
The first sitting of the student parliament was witnessed by neighbouring school teachers and students. The session concluded successfully with college song.
