Hon.K.Sripavan, Old Boy of Jaffna Hindu College, is the new Chief Justice of Sri Lanka

Justice Kanagasabapathy Sripavan, the distinguished old boy of Jaffna Hindu College, was appointed as the new Chief Justice of Sri Lanka by the President Maithripala Sirisena. He took oath as the Chief Justice of Sri Lanka in front of the President of Sri Lanka  on Friday, 30 January 2015. Justice Sripavan is the senior most Judge of the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka. He succeeds Dr. Shirani Bandaranayake as the 44th Chief Justice.
Justice K. Sripavan is the third Tamil to occupy the seat of the Chief Justice of Sri Lanka. The other two were Justice Herbert Thambiah and Suppiah Sarvananda. Jaffna Hindu College takes pride in having produced two of the three Tamil Chief Justices of Sri Lanka; namely Justice K.Sripavan and Justice S.Sarvananda, who was the Chief Justice from 1984 to 1988. During the same period, Mr.Siva Pasupathy, another distinguished old boy of Jaffna Hindu College, functioned as the Attorney General.
The new Chief Justice Hon.K.Sripavan, who was born on the 29 February 1952 in Jaffna, had his secondary education at the Jaffna Hindu College from 1962 to 1972. From there, he entered the Sri Lanka Law College and studied law from 1974 to 1976. In 1976, he obtained a first class at the Intermediate examination for the admission of Attorneys-at -Law and was enrolled as an Attorney-at Law in 1977. For a short period from August 1977 to February 1978, he practiced Law at the Unofficial Bar of Sri Lanka. Then, in the early 1978, he was appointed as the Acting State Counsel, and from there, he rose to be the Senior State Counsel in 1989, Deputy Solicitor General in 1996, and then Appeal Court Judge, Supreme Court Judge, and finally, now the Chief Justice. He has made his legal fraternity proud with his many landmark judgements in Supreme Court. It is to be noted that the incumbent President Maithripala Sirisena was sworn in as the sixth President of Sri Lanka by Justice K.Sripavan.

JHC as a leading school only visited by Swamy Vivehanada, Mahathma Gandhi and recent by the former President of India has been producing some of the finest minds in many field over a century and legal profession is no exception.
I visited SL law college a decade ago with one of it\'s ablest student the eldest daughter of my late engineer brother, old boy of JHC and alumni of Peradeniya Engineering Faculty ,who passed out as a lawyer with first class in 2005 .My great grand father who founded a school 5 years before JHC was reported to have been a magistrate during the colonial times who\'s grand son a brilliant old boy of JHC topped the Engineering at Peradeniya more than 3 decades ago.
