Dr.P.Jayakumar (1977 Maths) awarded U.S. Department of Defense Scientist of the Quarter
Posted on: 31/03/2016 (Thursday)
Dr. Paramsothy Jayakumar (1977 A/L Maths) has been awarded the United States Department of Defense Scientist of the Quarter in March 2016. He received this award on 17 March 2016 from Mr. Frank Kendall, the Under Secretary of Defense for Acquisition, Technology and Logistics. The distinguished “Scientist of the Quarter” award was given in recognition of his breakthrough accomplishment in analytical terramechanics modeling and simulation for autonomous mobility of ground vehicles. This is what the citation on his award reads:

Receiving the award from Mr. Frank Kendall, the Under Secretary of Defense

"As a recognized subject matter expert in modeling and simulation, your work with the development of terramechanics models that capture the physics of vehicle - deformable terrain interaction strongly supports the Department's focus on mobility of ground systems. Your leadership of the Intelligent Vehicle Dynamics and Control thrust area for the Automotive Research Center and implementation of a roadmap towards achieving the goal of autonomous mobility through modeling and simulation will benefit many of the Department’s ground systems efforts. Your collaborative efforts across DoD, NATO, academia, national labs, and industry to advance mobility research and development is especially noteworthy. In recognition of your individual efforts and your efforts on behalf of the Department, you are truly deserving of this honor." - signed Frank Kendall, Under Secretary of Defense for Acquisition, Technology and Logistics.

Dr.Jayakumar had his primary education at Jaffna Hindu Primary from 1965 to 1969 and secondary education at Jaffna Hindu College from 1970 to 1977. During his school days he had been active in many extra-curricular activities. He was the Treasurer and President of Audio Visual Club, Officer of School National Savings Bank, Executive Committee Member of A/L Students' Union, and Member of Police Cadet Corps. He was also a School Prefect and was the Assistant Editor of “Young Hindu" Magazine in 1975 and the Editor of it in 1976. He was a member and the leader of the Jaffna Hindu Science Quiz Team that won the All Island Prize from 1975-1977. In his individual capacity, he won the General Knowledge Prize from 1973-1976 and obtained the best results in GCE (O/L) and GCE (A/L) Examinations in 1974 and 1977 respectively. Thus, he received the Jaffna Hindu Best Student award in 1977. After schooling, he entered the University of Peradeniya in 11978 to pursue his higher studies in Engineering. At the university too he excelled in studies and was the top student continuously from 1979 to 1982. He passed out as a B.Sc. Eng. (Honors, First Class), in Civil Engineering in 1982 and proceeded to California Institute of Technology (Caltech) for his postgraduate studies. Dr.Jayakumar received his  M.S. (1984) and Ph.D. (1987) degrees in Structural Dynamics from Caltech. Jayakumar is proud of being a product of Jaffna Hindu and says Jaffna Hindu was his lifeline when he was studying there.

Dr.P.Jayakumar, PhD, SAE Fellow, is currently a Senior Technical Expert in Modeling and Simulation and a Member of the Analytics organization at the U.S. Army Tank Automotive Research, Development and Engineering Center (TARDEC) in Warren, Michigan.  He is one of the highly-decorated scientists, and has earned numerous awards. He is a Fellow of Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE). He was also been awarded the Society of Automotive Engineers prestigious Colwell Medal in 2014.

Dr. Jayakumar began his career with the U.S. Army TARDEC in 2009 following the employment with Ford Motor Company and BAE Systems. He has worked in research, development, and engineering of ground vehicle mobility, on- & off-road, and intelligent vehicles. He is the recognized leader in the field of mobility and vehicle dynamics modeling and simulation in the U.S. Department of Defense and automotive communities.

In addition to his personal accomplishments, Dr. Jayakumar is also an exemplary team builder, bringing together experts from the DoD, NATO, Academia, National Labs, and Industry to advance mobility research and development. He leads the Intelligent Vehicle Dynamics and Control thrust area for the Automotive Research Center, a U.S. Army Center of Excellence for Modeling and Simulation of Ground Vehicles. In that capacity, Dr. Jayakumar developed and successfully implemented a roadmap toward achieving the goal of autonomous mobility through M&S. He also leads a NATO S&T Team to develop the Next-Generation NATO Reference Mobility Model (NRMM) to replace the decades-old empirical model with a physics-based approach thus accommodating new vehicle designs, technologies, and M&S capabilities.

Dr. Jayakumar has written more than 125 technical publications including journal articles and conference papers, and holds two patents. He serves as an Associate Editor of the ASME Journal of Computational and Nonlinear Dynamics, and an Editorial Board Member for the International Journal of Vehicle Performance. His research in Terramechanics and vehicle dynamics won the best paper award at the National Defense Industrial Association's Ground Vehicle Systems Engineering and Technology Symposium in 2011 and 2012. He was elected a Fellow of the Society of Automotive Engineers in 2013. He was also instrumental in developing seven SAE standards for tire testing for the purpose of tire modeling for which he received the SAE 2014 James M. Crawford Technical Standards Board Outstanding Achievement Award and Arch T. Colwell Cooperative Engineering Medal. His accomplishments at the U.S. Army TARDEC have been recognized with his appointment in 2015 as the Senior Technical Expert for Analytics.

Dr.Jayakumar’s goal in this field is to make the physics-based mobility calculator at the center of geospatial data of terrain and soil maps so that mobility performance metrics such as a Go/No-Go map can be derived.

The Jaffna Hindu Web team takes pride in the achievements of this distinguished old boy of Jaffna Hindu and congratulates Dr.Jayakumar on being named the Scientist of the Quarter by the U.S. Department of Defense.

Thank You My Friends and Teachers - Dr.P.Jayakumar

My Dear Friends and Teachers,

I want to say THANK YOU for all your kind words. Your praises and encouragement mean more than the award itself. I am so happy to connect back with old friends and also make new friends here. I appreciated very much the kind words from my Chemistry teacher Mr. S. Ponnampalam without his help I wouldn't have succeeded in my A/L Chemistry. Thank you also to all the friends who wrote to me directly or phoned me to wish.

I owe so much to Jaffna Hindu College, its Principals, Teachers, and fellow students who gave me so many opportunities to learn, grow, excel, and have fun too believe it or not. JHC offered me an unprecedented level of freedom in spite of being part of a conservative society.  Even the legendary disciplinarian, Principal Sabalingam sat and listened when I repeatedly refused to move from Math stream to BioScience during the first week of my 10th grade school year. I left his office winning the argument and surprisingly unscathed! JHC prepared me for a lifetime of questioning the authority, sometimes at my peril, but always on the right side.

When I look back, I can easily say that the JHC days were the most memorable and enjoyable that also came with the least responsibilities. Nothing can beat that combination!

Thank you all so much and Best of Luck in everything you do too!

Your Friend and Student,
P. Jayakumar
