Chitra Pournami 2015 on Sunday, 3 May
Posted on: 01/05/2015 (Friday)

Chithra Pournami 2015 is on Sunday, 3rd May 2015. The Chithra Pournami viratham is observed on the full moon day that falls in the month of Chithrai (April-May). It is a sacred day to remember our female ancestors and obey fasting. As the sun is associated with fathers, the moon is associated with mothers. Especially, full moon or pournami is beleived to be close to the mothers. And Chithra pournami is more special as the star Chithrai (Virginis) is close to the moon on this day.

In India, it is also called Chitragupta Viratham and has various mythologies. According to Hindu believe, a person's soul going either to heaven or hell depends on the nature of his or her sins that they accrue in this world. Chitraguptas are believed to be the demi-gods of the Yamaloka who assist Yamarajah in deciding whom to send to heaven and whom to send to hell by keeping an account of human's good and bad deeds when they live on the earth. So, Chitragupta Viratham is observed to appease the demi gods and to remind us that there is someone above us who is continuously observing all our deeds and taking account of all our good deeds as well as the sins.
