Aadi Amavasai tomorrow, 2nd August 2016
Posted on: 31/07/2016 (Sunday)
Aadi Amavasai is one of the important days in the Hindu calender; it is a special day dedicated to our forefathers and ancestors. Aadi Amavasai is the new moon day in July-August (Tamil month of Aadi). It is the new moon when the sun is in Cancer, the house of Moon. On this day, the Sun and the Moon rise and fall at the same time. This year's Aadi Amavasai viratham will be observed tomorrow, Tuesday, 2nd August 2016.

According to Hindu believe, there are two significant times each year when Ancestors come to the Earth for their due. One is Chithirai Pournami and the other is Aadi Amavasai. It is  believed that our ancestors are vested with mystical powers and authority and their spirit retains a functional role in the world of the living, especially in the life of their living relations. It is believed that the dead have a journey to make, to bestow the positive deeds for their dear ones through the ancient technology of ancestral worship. The departed soul gains the power to govern your destiny. The ancestors can bring you great success or the flip side can bring much suffering. When they are honored and remembered through the right rituals, things can turn around in your life and your protective guardians become benevolent to you and others in your family line.

The ritual performed on this auspicious day for our departed forefathers is called "Tharpanam", which means "satisfying" or "satiating". It is a process of satisfying the ancestors and enables one to negate the unwanted desires. By performing Tharpanam, you can connect with ancestors and pray for peace to their soul and gain their blessings. It is also said that the Tharpanam ritual liberates your ancestors from any curse. Devotees take a holy dip in a sacred theertham to wash away their physical as well as mental impurities, and offer rice, black sesame seeds, dharbai grass, tulasi to our ancestors.
