The Batch of 1982 (A/L) had a grand get together in Toronto Canada from 24th to 27th in July 2014. 71 old students from the1982 batch, most of them entering their 50s, flocked to Toronto from all around the world to meet their school buddies after a long 32 years. They came from USA, Canada, UK, Australia, Norway, and Netherlands for the reunion. The 4 days of get together was filled with lots of fun and cherished memories.
On the day of the arrival, that was the 24th July, a Thursday, a surprise welcome party was organised by the Toronto based old boys for the group at Milliken Park, Markham. The Evening function started with a two minute silence for all those who lost their lives in the civil war, as well as for the batch mates who have passed away. Mr. Arumugasamy, former teacher at Jaffna Hindu, lit the oil lamp and started the event. For all the batch mates who have passed away, their closest friends read a 2 minute remembrance and key traits of them. JHC Canada President briefed the gathering a project to build a stadium at JHC for sports.
For the next two days of the get together, a Cottage on a large property was organised at Kirkfield, which is about 120km north of Toronto. The two nights stay was exclusively for the old boys. The two days and nights gave an opportunity for the old boys to chit-chat, discuss, sing, and dance and, in general, to recall the good old days. Games of cards, game of volleyball and beach visit during the daytime was something of an excitement for the aging old boys from the Batch of 1982.
After the event, Rs2 lakhs was donated to Sivapoomi Trust in Jaffna to assist with the purchase of air tickets to three children who were selected to participate in the Special Olympics in Los Angeles http://www.specialolympics.org. Mr.K.Subramaniam from the 82 batch, who lives in Jaffna, was instrumental in coordinating this effort.
Dr.Kumara Suriyar wrote and produced a song for this gathering.
